African Union voices concern over political developments in Venezuela

The African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and alleged military attacks on state institutions.

In a statement, the continental body reaffirmed its firm committment to the fundamental principles of international law, particularly respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as well as the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

The AU underscored the importance of dialogue, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and strict adherence to constitutional and institutional frameworks, stressing that these principles are essential to good neighbourliness, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence among nations.

According to the African Union, the complex internal challenges confronting Venezuela can only be resolved sustainably through an inclusive political dialogue led by Venezuelans themselves, without external interference.

The organisation also expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterated its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions. It called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint, act responsibly, and respect international law in order to prevent escalation and safeguard regional peace and stability.
