ECOWAS calls for restraint, dialogue over venezuela tensions

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint and adhere strictly to international law.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the regional bloc acknowledged the right of sovereign states to combat transnational crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking. However, it stressed that such actions must be conducted within the framework of established international legal norms.

ECOWAS reminded the international community of the obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, as enshrined in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.

The bloc said it aligns fully with the African Union’s position, articulated in a statement released on 3 January 2026, which called for restraint and encouraged inclusive dialogue among Venezuelans as the most viable path to resolving the country’s challenges.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions following reports of foreign military actions in Venezuela and increasing international reactions to the evolving security and political situation. The South American nation has faced prolonged political instability, economic hardship and sustained international pressure in recent years, resulting in deep domestic and global divisions over how best to address the crisis.

ECOWAS reiterated its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and called on all states to respect Venezuela’s independence and territorial integrity. It also expressed support for efforts by Venezuelans to determine their future through an inclusive and peaceful process.

The West African regional body joins a growing number of international and regional organisations advocating de-escalation and dialogue as the situation in Venezuela continues to attract global attention.
