Navy hands over stowaways to immigration in Lagos

The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT has handed over two suspected stowaways rescued from a merchant vessel to the Nigeria Immigration Service in Lagos.

The handover, which took place on Monday, March 23, 2026, was made to officials of the Lagos Ports/Marine Command in Apapa, represented by DSI Eneji Emmanuel Ochokpa.

The suspects were rescued from MV SEASPAN LAHORE after being discovered in the early hours of Thursday, March 19, 2026, during routine security checks by naval personnel. They were found hiding in the vessel’s rudder compartment while the ship was underway near the Lagos Fairway Buoy.

Following their discovery, the individuals were safely extracted and taken to NNS BEECROFT for preliminary investigation.

Naval authorities identified the suspects as Abdullahi Yakubu, 36, described as a repeat offender, and Omoniyi Afotona, 25. Both are believed to have gained unauthorised access to the vessel at Apapa Port prior to its departure.

A stowaway is defined as an individual who clandestinely boards a vessel to travel illegally to another country without proper documentation or authorisation.

The Nigerian Navy used the opportunity to caution against the practice, describing it as both illegal and life-threatening. It urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to sensitise young people on the dangers associated with irregular migration, encouraging those seeking opportunities abroad to pursue lawful channels.

The Commander of NNS BEECROFT, A. Adams-Aliu, reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to maritime security, noting that the command remains aligned with the strategic objectives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas.

He stated that the Navy would continue to deploy a professional and responsive force to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime domain, support joint operations, and contribute to national security and stability.
