Amnesty International demands probe into fatal stray bullet incident in Maiduguri

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the alleged reckless use of firearms by military personnel, which reportedly led to the death of a 14-year-old girl in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The victim, a secondary school student, was killed on Saturday, April 4, after being struck by a stray bullet while inside her home. Reports indicate that the गोली was discharged by military personnel engaged in celebratory gunfire during a wedding ceremony at a nearby event centre.

According to a family friend, the teenager resided with her family in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) quarters and was indoors at the time of the incident.

“She had just finished applying henna for her mother and herself, joyfully preparing for a family wedding scheduled for that same day,” the source said, describing the moments leading up to the tragedy.

The victim was laid to rest on Sunday at the Maiduguri cemetery, as grieving family members and friends continue to seek answers over what they describe as a preventable loss.

Amnesty International emphasized the need for a transparent, impartial, and effective investigation into the incident, urging authorities to take necessary measures to safeguard lives and ensure accountability.
