The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a statement concerning the planned protests by sections of the organized labor scheduled for February 27th and 28th, 2024, over various economic grievances. While acknowledging the right of the labour movement to protest, the DSS appeals to them to reconsider their plans in the interest of maintaining peace and public order.
In a statement the agency Director of PR & Strategic Communications highlights the potential for unrest and violence during the protests, the DSS emphasizes the importance of dialogue and negotiation in addressing grievances rather than resorting to actions that could exacerbate tensions. The agency is aware of plans by certain elements to exploit the protests for nefarious purposes, which could escalate into widespread violence, worsening the country’s socio-economic situation.
He emphasizes the agency’s stance against violence as a means of addressing challenges and assures collaboration with other security agencies to uphold peace.
Acknowledging the government’s efforts to address economic challenges, the DSS urges citizens to allow authorities the opportunity to tackle these issues through peaceful means. Quoting the renowned poet JP Clark, the agency underscores the dangers of escalated conflicts and the need to prioritize peace.
The DSS also calls on various sectors of society, including parents, political parties, religious and traditional institutions, civil society, and non-governmental organizations, to refrain from violence and divisive rhetoric. It warns against allowing external forces to destabilize the nation and reaffirms its commitment, alongside other security agencies, to maintaining peace and security in the country.
