In a disturbing development, the peaceful and mediatory assignment undertaken by troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the Nigerian Army (NA) took a tragic turn with their merciless killing during a reported communal clash involving the Okuama and Okoloba Communities in Ughelli South and Bomadi LGAs of Delta State, respectively. The abhorrent nature of this incident warrants unreserved condemnation from all quarters.
In a statement issued by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, it was highlighted that these troops, entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring peace and security in the Niger Delta Region, were subjected to a brutal assault by an armed youth faction hailing from the Okuama Community. The manner in which they were ruthlessly slain, marked by its gruesomeness, heartlessness, and cruelty, is deeply unsettling. Furthermore, the desecration of the soldiers’ remains through the removal of their hearts underscores the depravity of the crime.
Rather than cooperating with authorities to facilitate the swift apprehension of the perpetrators, the Okuama Community has opted to engage in a campaign of media propaganda and subterfuge. Such behavior serves only to underscore the community’s complicity in orchestrating the assault against forces dedicated to upholding peace and security.
The dissemination of false narratives by these individuals, aimed at garnering unwarranted sympathy and clouding their culpability, must be unequivocally rejected. Such propaganda endeavors only serve to shield the perpetrators from the justice they rightfully deserve. The community’s unwillingness to collaborate with law enforcement agencies speaks volumes about its involvement in this reprehensible act.
While reassuring citizens that there will be no retaliatory actions from the military, the public is urged to remain composed and continue with their daily routines. Simultaneously, exhaustive efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits, ensuring they are held accountable for their heinous actions.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, Lt. Gen. Toareed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. He has also issued clear directives to spare no effort in the pursuit of justice. The military remains steadfast in its commitment to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face the full weight of the law.
Major General Nwachukwu emphasized that the resort to propaganda by the Okuama Community in the aftermath of this heinous crime is not only condemnable but also indicative of a concerted effort to evade accountability. Justice must prevail, and those responsible for this reprehensible act must be swiftly and decisively brought to justice.
