MJTF makes strides in restoring stability to Lake Chad Basin

In the heart of Africa, the Lake Chad Basin serves as a vital resource for tens of millions, functioning as an ecological sanctuary and a linchpin in regional stability. This expansive area, spanning Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger, sustains biodiversity, agriculture, and diverse cultures. However, it has also been plagued by turmoil exacerbated by insurgent groups like Boko Haram.

Amidst these challenges, hope emerges from the efforts of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) over the past ten months. This coalition, comprising forces from Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Benin Republic, aims to counteract the threat posed by insurgent groups, particularly Boko Haram.

The Lake Chad Basin, home to over 30 million people, is crucial for livelihoods, offering water, fish, grazing land, and irrigation for agriculture. Beyond its economic significance, it serves as an ecological habitat, combating desertification and supporting diverse species.

Despite its importance, insecurity stemming from insurgent activities has plagued the region, resulting in a humanitarian crisis with millions displaced and at risk of starvation. In response, the MNJTF, under the command of Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali, has made commendable strides in restoring peace and security.

The MNJTF’s approach combines kinetic and non-kinetic efforts, resulting in significant achievements such as dislodging insurgents, rescuing hostages, and reducing the frequency of attacks. Operation NASHRUL SALAM, a non-kinetic initiative, fostered surrender among terrorists through tailored messages disseminated across the region in multiple languages.

Supported by the European Union, the MNJTF executed Quick Impact Projects to enhance stability, including assisting the resettlement of displaced persons and reviving economic activities like fishing and agriculture.

Operation LAKE SANITY 2, initiated to thwart terrorist regrouping, underscores the commitment of member states to maintaining peace. The troops’ dedication has garnered support from local communities, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in achieving success.

Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, Chief Public Information Officer at MNJTF Headquarters in Ndjamena, Chad Republic, highlights the collaborative success story of the MNJTF under Major General IS Ali. As the MNJTF continues its efforts, sustained international support and commitment from member states are crucial for the long-term stability and development of the Lake Chad Basin.
