NAF to establish permanent base in Abia

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to establish a permanent presence in Abia State. This development was announced following a meeting between the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State at his residence in Mvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

In a statement Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet said Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the NAF’s presence would enhance airspace security, support emergency response, disaster management, and community development initiatives. He emphasized NAF’s commitment to extending its air power reach in response to national security needs, particularly in Abia State and the Southeast Region.

Reflecting on the tragic incident at Obikabia Junction in Obingwa Local Government Area in May 2024, where soldiers lost their lives, Air Marshal Abubakar assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

He commended Governor Otti for his dedication to public service and effective governance aimed at improving the living standards of Abians. “We admire your governance style, which is people-oriented and focused on sustainable growth, development, and prosperity,” he said.

Governor Otti expressed his appreciation for the timely establishment of a NAF Base, coinciding with the Federal Government’s approval of an airstrip construction in the state. He offered a large expanse of land for the NAF Base and promised to provide a temporary site at Umuahia, along with residential accommodations, mobility, and other necessities to ensure the base becomes operational within two months. He highlighted the base’s potential to strengthen the efforts of other security agencies in the state.

Addressing the killing of soldiers in May, Governor Otti announced an increase in the bounty on those responsible from N25 million to N30 million, following an additional N5 million donation from a state resident in the United States. He urged all citizens to support security agencies in eradicating criminal elements disrupting the state’s peace.
