Nigerian Navy deactivates illegal refining sites in Bayelsa

In a decisive operation named DELTA SANITY, the Nigerian Navy has struck a major blow against oil theft and illegal refining in Bayelsa State. On Monday, the Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH discovered and deactivated two illegal refining sites in the Galegalegbene Gbaran Community. These sites were laden with an unspecified quantity of stolen crude oil, representing a significant loss for the illicit operators.

In a related operation, another illegal refining site was uncovered and shut down in the Phillip community general area of Brass Local Government Area (LGA). This site contained a large amount of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and additional stolen crude oil. The operation underscores the Navy’s commitment to combating illegal activities that undermine Nigeria’s economy and environmental safety.

The success of Operation DELTA SANITY highlights the ongoing efforts of the Nigerian Navy to protect national resources and ensure maritime security. Commodore Uchenna Onyema, spokesperson for the Nigerian Navy, emphasized the importance of these operations in preserving the integrity of the nation’s oil infrastructure. He reiterated the Navy’s dedication to eradicating illegal refineries and curbing oil theft, which have significant economic and environmental implications.

Local authorities have been alerted to the situation, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the illegal activities. The Nigerian Navy has called on community members to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities and cooperating with security agencies.

This latest operation is part of a broader strategy to clamp down on illegal oil refining and theft, which have plagued the region for years. By disrupting these illicit activities, the Navy aims to stabilize the local economy and protect the environment from the devastating effects of unregulated refining processes.
