Nigerian Army receives first aircrafts, establishes Army aviation

The Nigerian Army (NA) has marked a pivotal moment in its operational development with the delivery of its first set of new aircraft. This milestone signals the formal establishment of the Nigerian Army Aviation wing, enhancing the NA’s capacity for air support in ground operations.

At a brief ceremony held on June 20, 2024, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja officially received the BELL UH-1H (HUEY) helicopters. The event, overseen by Director of Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, highlighted the significant progress of the NA Aviation initiative, which began under former COAS Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah (rtd) in 2014.

General Lagbaja praised the dedication of former Chiefs of Army Staff and the collective efforts of NA personnel, along with the Nigerian Government’s political support, in realizing the establishment of NA Aviation. He specifically thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to funding the acquisition of the aircraft and supporting the aviation project.

The BELL UH-1H helicopters, equipped with advanced sensors and capabilities, are designed for a variety of missions including reconnaissance, surveillance, rescue, logistics, transportation, and medical evacuation. This acquisition enhances the NA’s ability to provide a secure environment conducive to economic prosperity.

Coordinator of NA Aviation, Brigadier General Musa Alkali, emphasized that the new aircraft signify a major advancement in the NA’s operational capabilities, aligning with the COAS’s Command Philosophy. Brig Gen Alkali highlighted the NA’s long-term commitment to improving its aviation capabilities amidst an evolving security landscape.

Retired Major General Emeka Onwuamaegbu, a consultant for the Nigerian Army Aviation and a trained helicopter pilot, commended the NA for its sustained vision that culminated in the establishment of the army’s aviation wing.

This development underscores the NA’s commitment to enhancing its operational effectiveness and supporting national security initiatives.
