Africans Rising, along with 400 civil society organizations and movements across Africa and the diaspora, has sent a powerful letter to Kenyan President William Ruto, demanding an end to the government’s clampdown on protesters.
The letter, supported by a broad coalition, underscores the solidarity of African people with Kenyans facing misgovernance, corruption, and economic hardship. The organizations laid out several demands to the Ruto administration:
Despite a decrease in protests, the letter expressed ongoing concerns about the safety of participants. It highlighted the troubling record of Kenyan security forces in targeting protest organizers, including acts of intimidation, abduction, and human rights abuses. The coalition warned that it would closely monitor and respond to any post-protest abuses.
“We believe that in the spirit of Ubuntu, whatever affects one African affects all Africans,” the letter concluded, emphasizing the collective commitment to justice and human rights across the continent.
