The Edo State Government took the lead in galvanizing football enthusiasts and residents across the Benin metropolis. The purpose was to rally unwavering support for Bendel Insurance in anticipation of their upcoming CAF Confederation clash against ASO Chlef FC from Algeria. The crucial match was scheduled to unfold at Benin City’s Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Saturday.
Heading the initiative was Mrs. Hauwa Dupe Ohikhuai, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Edo City Transport Limited. She spearheaded a spirited road show aimed at mobilizing the people of Edo in substantial numbers. The aim was to encourage a strong turnout the following day, igniting a collective outpouring of cheers to propel the state’s football squad towards triumph.
In her words, “Our purpose in embarking on this road march is to spread awareness and to inspire a massive crowd to assemble at the stadium tomorrow, united in cheering on our beloved Bendel Insurance team to secure victory. This match holds immense significance for us as it marks a return of such magnitude after a span of over thirty years. Now that this momentous occasion is upon us, we are determined to make the most of it.”
She continued, “The governor has directed us to make available all our buses for the purpose of providing complimentary rides. This gesture aims to ensure that each individual can be present at the stadium, contributing their support to our Bendel Insurance team. Our presence is pivotal; our cheers and encouragement shall be the wind beneath their wings. Today, through this road show, we’re fostering awareness.”
Ohikhuai also shared, “Starting at 12pm tomorrow, a fleet of buses will be stationed at the designated spots we’ve announced: Ugbowo, Siluko, Airport Road, Mission Road, New Benin, Sakponba Road, Aduwawa/Eyan, Sapele Road, and Ekewan Road. These buses will be at the ready to transport everyone.”
She went on to explain, “Upon boarding the bus, complimentary tickets will be distributed to grant entry into the stadium, ensuring a peaceful and enjoyable match-watching experience. Additionally, the first 100 attendees will receive complimentary jerseys and other gift items. Once the match concludes, we’ll ensure a return journey to the original pickup points. We wholeheartedly encourage the people of Edo to turn out in full force, to lend their voices and presence in support of Bendel Insurance’s conquest. Our aspiration is to pack the stadium to capacity, thereby providing them with resounding moral backing.”
The road show embarked on its route, commencing from Agbor Road and winding its way through Akpakpava, Kings Square, Ekenwan Road, and finally concluding at Stadium Road, traversing a number of other locations along the way.
