On Monday, July 22, 2024, the Forward Operating Base FORMOSO executed a significant operation under Operation DELTA SANITY, leading to the discovery and deactivation of three illegal refining sites in the Brass River and Nembe areas. This decisive action is part of the broader efforts to combat the rampant oil theft and illegal refining activities plaguing the region.
During the operation, the base’s team identified and neutralized five refining ovens laden with large quantities of stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). These clandestine operations pose severe threats not only to Nigeria’s economy but also to the environmental and public health of the affected communities.
The Commanding Officer of Forward Operating Base FORMOSO, Commodore Isaac Olorunfemi, emphasized the importance of such operations in safeguarding the nation’s resources. “Our mission under Operation DELTA SANITY is clear – to eliminate illegal refining activities and protect our national assets. The deactivation of these sites demonstrates our unwavering commitment to this cause,” Commodore Olorunfemi stated.

The operation was meticulously planned and executed, involving coordinated intelligence gathering and swift action by the naval forces. This success is a testament to the enhanced capabilities and readiness of the Nigerian Navy in addressing the complex challenges of illegal oil activities.
In addition to the immediate economic impact, the deactivation of these sites significantly reduces the environmental damage caused by illegal refining. The crude methods used in these operations often lead to oil spills, gas flaring, and widespread pollution, severely affecting local ecosystems and communities.
Operation DELTA SANITY continues to play a pivotal role in restoring order and security in the Niger Delta region. By targeting and dismantling illegal refining networks, the operation aims to deter future criminal activities and promote sustainable development.
Local authorities and community leaders have lauded the efforts of the Forward Operating Base FORMOSO and the broader Operation DELTA SANITY initiative. Chief Ebikeme Okilo, a community leader in Nembe, expressed gratitude for the military’s intervention, stating, “The deactivation of these illegal sites brings hope to our communities. It is a significant step towards preserving our environment and ensuring the well-being of our people.”
As Operation DELTA SANITY progresses, continued collaboration between the military, government agencies, and local communities will be crucial in maintaining the momentum and achieving lasting success in the fight against oil theft and illegal refining in the Niger Delta.
