Planned Protests: IPCR calls for calm and restraint

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has issued a call for calm and restraint ahead of the planned protests against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the IPCR urged Civil Society Groups, organizers, and other bodies involved in the planned protests to act with caution to avoid exacerbating the already tense situation in the country. The Institute emphasized that while the nation faces significant challenges, these difficulties are part of a broader global economic crisis, not unique to Nigeria.

Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, Director General of IPCR, stated: “This wise counsel comes at a critical juncture, as protests at this point in time could jeopardize the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” He cautioned that hasty actions could lead to unintended consequences and stressed the need for measured responses to the current challenges.

The Institute highlighted that any actions disrupting the fragile peace would be counterproductive, particularly in the context of President Tinubu’s efforts to revitalize the nation’s prospects. Dr. Ochogwu noted, “Protests, while a fundamental right, can sometimes be counterproductive if not carefully considered. In this case, the Institute’s warning suggests that protests could disorganize the efforts aimed at addressing the nation’s challenges.”

IPCR’s call for restraint underscores the importance of unity and collective effort during these difficult times. “By urging calm and restraint, the Institute encourages citizens to prioritize constructive engagement and collaboration rather than resorting to actions that could undermine the fragile peace,” Dr. Ochogwu added.

The statement concludes with a reminder that strategic thinking and careful consideration are essential, even in adversity. By heeding the Institute’s warning, citizens can help create a more stable and peaceful environment conducive to the success of President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
