The FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested four individuals for allegedly setting fire to a police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint and attempting to vandalize the Tipper Garage Police Post. The suspects, identified as Mathias Jude, 29, from Nyanya Area D, Mohammad Ahmed, 23, Abba Jibril, 18, and Mohammad Haruna, 18, were taken into custody following the incident.
In an official statement, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, provided details of the arrests. According to SP Adeh, the police acted swiftly upon receiving information about the arson and vandalism attempts. The suspects were apprehended at the scene and taken to the police station for further investigation.
SP Adeh stated that the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, has expressed concern over the rising incidents of property destruction during protests. While CP Igweh acknowledged the constitutional right of residents to peaceful protest, he strongly condemned acts of violence and destruction of public property. He warned that any individuals found participating in violent demonstrations or damaging public or police infrastructure would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“The FCT Police Command will not tolerate any form of lawlessness or vandalism,” SP Adeh emphasized. “We urge residents to express their grievances through lawful and peaceful means. The safety and security of our communities are of paramount importance, and any act that threatens this will be met with appropriate legal action.”
The police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the motive behind the attack and to identify any other individuals who may have been involved. The arrested suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged in court accordingly.
Residents of Nyanya and the surrounding areas are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities to ensure the safety and security of the community. The FCT Police Command remains committed to maintaining law and order and protecting public infrastructure from harm.
