Police crackdown on display of foreign flags during hunger protests

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong condemnation of the display of foreign flags and calls for a military takeover during recent protests, labeling these actions as treasonable felonies. The warning follows a series of violent demonstrations in Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina States, where protesters were seen brandishing foreign flags.

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said investigations have revealed that organizers of these protests are enlisting innocent children to partake in these unpatriotic acts.

He said authorities have arrested over ninety individuals, including tailors responsible for making the flags and their sponsors. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional sponsors linked to these treasonable offenses.

Adejobi said the display of foreign flags and advocacy for a military takeover represent a direct threat to Nigeria’s democratic governance. He said this is consistent with intelligence suggesting that certain groups are exploiting economic hardship protests to destabilize the country.

He said despite the calming effect of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s address on August 4, 2024, some factions continue their subversive activities under the guise of protests, engaging in acts of violence and destruction of property.

Inspector General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has directed Deputy Inspectors General of Police Bala Ciroma and Bello Makwashi to oversee operations in the affected regions, ensuring stability and preventing further violence.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that such actions constitute a capital offense under Nigerian law and cautions the public, particularly the youth, against being misled by those turning protests into a business venture funded by local or foreign entities. The Police commend Nigerians who have chosen not to participate in these protests and those who have supported peaceful dialogue.

Adejobi said the NPF remains dedicated to preserving peace and security across the nation.
