In a bold move to enhance the healthcare landscape in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has announced the launch of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA)-Healthcare Expansion Programme, alongside a comprehensive retraining initiative targeting 120,000 frontline health workers.
This ambitious programme aims to not only improve the health and social well-being of Nigerians but also position the country as a healthcare hub within Africa. Central to the initiative is the establishment of ten world-class healthcare facilities, specializing in oncology and diagnostics, across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These facilities will build on the successes of previous NSIA projects, such as the NSIA-Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Cancer Centre and the diagnostic centers in Kano and Umuahia.
Speaking during the launch event in Bauchi State, President Tinubu, represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized that these new healthcare facilities will play a crucial role in reducing medical tourism and expanding cancer care infrastructure. The first phase of the expansion will see the NSIA’s subsidiary, Medserve, managing what will become West Africa’s largest network of oncology and diagnostic centers, with plans to train 500 clinicians over the next three years.
President Tinubu also highlighted the importance of the retraining programme for health workers, underlining its role in equipping Nigeria’s healthcare workforce with the latest skills to meet the nation’s evolving needs. He linked the initiative to his commitment as the African Union (AU) Champion for Human Resources for Health, stressing that a skilled workforce is essential to the success of any healthcare system.
The President further affirmed that the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) will continue to provide strategic direction, focusing on critical areas such as maternal and child health, disease prevention, and system strengthening. He reiterated that healthcare is a fundamental human right and a pillar of national security.
Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, also lauded the initiative, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for his significant investments in the health sector.
This new healthcare expansion and retraining initiative marks a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage and fostering greater economic and social development for all Nigerians.
