In a significant move against illegal oil refining operations, the Nigerian military, under the auspices of Operation Delta Sanity, has successfully discovered and dismantled a major illegal refining site in the Otumara Creek, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State. The operation took place on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, and was led by personnel from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos.
During the raid, the military team uncovered two wooden boats, five large dug-out pits, and numerous drums containing stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). The illicit site, which was strategically located in the creek to evade detection, was actively involved in the theft and illegal refining of crude oil, a practice that has long plagued the Niger Delta region.
The operation is part of the broader efforts under Operation Delta Sanity, an initiative aimed at curbing the rampant illegal oil refining, theft, and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta. These criminal activities not only result in significant economic losses for Nigeria but also cause extensive environmental damage, leading to pollution and health hazards for local communities.
By deactivating the illegal refining site, the Nigerian military has dealt a significant blow to the operations of oil thieves in the area. The discovery and subsequent destruction of the site underscore the military’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the nation’s oil resources and protecting the integrity of its environment.
Authorities have reiterated their resolve to continue monitoring and conducting operations in the region to eliminate illegal refining activities. The success of this operation highlights the effectiveness of the military’s strategies and its enhanced vigilance in the fight against oil-related crimes.
As investigations continue, the Nigerian military has warned those involved in illegal refining and oil theft that their activities will not go unchecked. The military remains determined to uphold the law and ensure that the nation’s oil resources are used for the benefit of all Nigerians.
The outcome of this operation is expected to serve as a deterrent to other illegal operators in the region, reinforcing the message that the Nigerian military is relentless in its efforts to combat oil theft and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta.
