The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) to uphold transparency and accountability in the discharge of its duties. Addressing the NPTF Executive Secretary, Mohammed Sheidu, during a courtesy visit at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on September 17, 2024, Olukoyede emphasized the importance of ensuring that funds and resources allocated to the police are managed efficiently.
“The Trust Fund’s mandate is to improve the welfare, infrastructure, and equipment for the police. What matters most is how transparently and accountably you manage these funds,” Olukoyede stated, urging Sheidu to scrutinize every decision and ensure no room for financial mismanagement.
Olukoyede expressed confidence in Sheidu’s leadership but warned that any sign of misconduct or lack of transparency would not go unnoticed. “I expect your tenure to bring enhanced transparency. Always be diligent in your actions because there’s a thin line between transparency and fraud,” he said.
The EFCC chairman linked Nigeria’s economic stagnation to systemic corruption, urging public office holders to recognize the transient nature of their appointments and remain accountable for their actions. “We won’t be here forever, so let’s always remember that one day, we’ll be held accountable for what we did while in office,” he advised.
In response, Sheidu praised the EFCC for its role in promoting national accountability and pledged the NPTF’s commitment to responsible resource management. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with the EFCC in building the capacity of the police and ensuring proper resource allocation to enhance law enforcement efforts across Nigeria.
