The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 3,500 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to maintain security during Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations, amid potential protest threats.
In a statement issued on Monday, the FCT Command’s spokesperson, Samuel A. Idoko, emphasized the Corps’ commitment to ensuring public safety, safeguarding critical national infrastructure, and preventing any form of unrest during the celebrations.
Specialized squads, including the Armed Squad, Special Crack Squad (Operation Adaka-su), Female Strike Force, Anti-Counter Terrorism Squad, Agro Rangers, and undercover operatives, are part of the deployment, Idoko revealed. These units have been strategically positioned across the FCT, from the city center to outlying area councils.
FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, while addressing personnel, stressed the importance of protecting critical assets and ensuring the safety of residents throughout the festivities. “The government and residents of the FCT expect a peaceful celebration. The Corps must work professionally to avoid any form of disruption,” Odumosu said.
He further emphasized strict adherence to the NSCDC’s Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) and directed 24-hour surveillance on vital national assets. Odumosu also urged collaboration between NSCDC personnel and other security agencies to maintain order during the event.
