Internet Fraud: EFCC returns $26,000 to Briton

In an event that took place on Monday, August 28, 2023, Christine Brown, a British citizen who fell victim to online fraud, was bestowed with a sum of $26,000 USD by the Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC’s efforts were acknowledged by Brown, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude for bringing her some relief after enduring the loss of her life’s savings to deceitful individuals.

Having been deceived by an internet scammer operating under a romance scheme, the 70-year-old Brown had taken her grievance to the EFCC. She recounted her distressing experience, detailing how she was ensnared by someone posing as an American entertainer named John Barrowman through online interactions. Unbeknownst to her, this person was a fraudster. As Brown narrated, their connection took on romantic undertones, and the scammer progressively coerced her into sending money via wire transfers, Bitcoin, and gift cards.

Kanu Idagu, the Zonal Commander, presided over the restitution of the retrieved funds and emphasized the Commission’s ongoing commitment to enhancing societal well-being. He declared, “We are making substantial efforts to ensure that fraud victims are compensated whenever feasible, and our dedication to this cause will remain resolute.” Idagu also cautioned the public to exercise vigilance in their online activities, as fraudsters roam the digital realm, preying on unsuspecting individuals.
