Nigerian Navy to host Gulf of Guinea Naval symposium

The Nigerian Navy will host the 8th Gulf of Guinea Naval Symposium (GOG Symposium) from Tuesday, November 26, to Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

In a statement Commodore A. Adams-Aliu said the symposium, themed “Maritime Security and Sustainable Development in the Gulf of Guinea,” will bring together naval and coast guard leaders from the Gulf of Guinea region, alongside international partners, to strengthen maritime security collaboration.

Co-organized with the European Union and the French Navy, the event focuses on addressing maritime threats and fostering sustainable development in a region critical to global trade and energy. The Gulf of Guinea accounts for 15% of global oil consumption, 5–6% of oil production, and 30% of maritime traffic.

Key sessions will explore topics such as:

  • Enhancing regional and international cooperation for maritime security.
  • Improving maritime domain awareness and information sharing.
  • Developing robust legal frameworks for maritime security operations.

Participants will include naval and coast guard chiefs from the Gulf of Guinea, as well as representatives from regional and international organizations. The symposium aims to advance the implementation of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct and promote effective maritime law enforcement.

This initiative underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to securing the Gulf of Guinea and fostering partnerships with global maritime stakeholders.
