PSC dismisses 18 senior officers, demotes 19 in misconduct clampdown

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken decisive action against misconduct within the Nigeria Police Force, dismissing 18 senior officers and demoting 19 others following its latest plenary meeting in Abuja.

In a statement, Head, Press and Public Relations Ikechukwu Ani said the commission reviewed 110 Pending Disciplinary Matters (PDM), 23 appeals, petitions, and 13 court judgments during the session.

Chaired by DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd.), with members including DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.) and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, the commission also approved recommendations on promotion matters, which have been forwarded to the Inspector General of Police for implementation.

The dismissed officers include 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent. Nineteen others faced rank reductions, including one Assistant Commissioner, one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and 13 Assistant Superintendents.

Two Assistant Inspectors General were also sanctioned: one received a reprimand for refusing lawful orders, while the other was issued a warning for negligence.

Other penalties issued included severe reprimands, warnings, and stepped-down cases pending further information from the Inspector General of Police.

Several of the dismissed officers are set to face prosecution by the Nigeria Police Force’s Legal Unit. The PSC also resolved 23 appeals, petitions, and nine legal matters during the meeting.

DIG Argungu emphasized the commission’s commitment to addressing disciplinary matters swiftly to enable the progression of deserving officers and enforce accountability for those found guilty. He warned officers to avoid engaging in civil disputes, such as land or marital issues, urging them to focus on criminal cases and threats to public safety.

The PSC reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for misconduct and its dedication to upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
