In a move aimed at setting new standards in corporate responsibility within the oil and gas sector, NNPC Limited has engaged in a strategic consultation with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
This collaboration marks a key milestone in the development of NNPC’s Corporate Human Rights Policy, which forms an integral part of its broader Sustainability Programme.
The engagement underscores NNPC’s commitment to embedding human rights principles into its business operations, signaling a shift toward a more holistic approach to corporate responsibility. By doing so, the company aims to harmonize profitability with social accountability, reflecting international best practices.
Chinedu Igwe, NNPC’s Head of Sustainability, led the discussions, reiterating the company’s vision to lead by example in integrating human rights into the operational fabric of the oil and gas industry. “Our goal is to set a benchmark for sustainable operations that respect human dignity while delivering value to our stakeholders,” Igwe stated during the consultation.
The initiative has garnered support from the NHRC, with its Executive Secretary and CEO, Dr. Anthony Okechukwu Ojukwu, SAN, lauding NNPC’s proactive approach. “This is a commendable step by NNPC Limited, and it aligns perfectly with international best practices and our national priorities. The NHRC is committed to providing the necessary support to ensure the successful implementation of this policy,” Dr. Ojukwu remarked.
As the collaboration progresses, it is expected to pave the way for the creation of a comprehensive framework that ensures the protection and promotion of human rights across NNPC’s value chain. By aligning with global standards and fostering partnerships with key stakeholders, NNPC demonstrates its dedication to responsible business practices, setting a high bar for corporate governance in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
This initiative reflects NNPC Limited’s broader mission of becoming a globally competitive and socially responsible energy company, with sustainability and ethical practices at the core of its operations.
