Insecurity: Gov Alia adopts digital solutions for border security, IDPs, and emergency response

Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has finalized plans to deploy cutting-edge digital infrastructure across volatile border areas, IDP camps, schools, farms, and markets to combat insecurity and enhance emergency management.

On December 16, 2024, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC), and the Bureau for Homeland Security (BHS) signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Makurdi. This partnership aims to establish advanced digital systems to improve public safety, disaster management, and governance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner for Communication and Digital Economy, Mr. Kwaghgba Amande, emphasized that Governor Alia’s international engagements in Zambia, Dubai, and China are driving the state’s digital transformation. “The governor’s vision is to make Benue a leader in digital innovation, and these efforts are already impacting the socio-economic well-being of our people,” Amande said.

Among the initiatives is a digital monitoring system to track absentee civil servants, set for rollout in January 2025. BDIC will also equip BSEMA with modern infrastructure to support IDP camps and establish a state-of-the-art Emergency Command and Control Center for real-time security and disaster response coordination.

“This partnership enhances our ability to monitor and respond to threats in high-risk areas,” said BDIC Managing Director Mr. Terwase Gbande. Surveillance systems at key locations, including IDP camps and borders, will enable proactive interventions and faster response times.

The initiative also seeks to empower displaced youth with digital skills through hubs offering training in technology and entrepreneurship, fostering self-reliance and economic growth.

Sir James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary of BSEMA, and Air Commodore Jacob Gbamwuan (rtd), Director General of BHS, stressed the importance of the project in boosting security and crisis response. “This infrastructure will enable data-driven decisions and timely interventions,” Iorpuu noted.

Governor Alia’s push for digital solutions underscores his commitment to transforming Benue into a model of innovation and resilience, positioning the state for long-term security, economic growth, and social advancement.
