Nigeria urges calm amid post-election violence in Mozambique

The Federal Republic of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the escalating post-election violence in Mozambique, which has resulted in over 121 deaths and left more than 380 injured. The unrest has particularly affected the capital city, Maputo, as well as major cities like Beira and Nampula.

The violence erupted following the Constitutional Council’s confirmation of Daniel Chapo of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) as the presidential election winner with 65% of the vote. The results were rejected by the opposition leader, sparking widespread protests.

In a statement issued by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Government called for calm and urged aggrieved political stakeholders to seek redress through legal channels.

“Our thoughts are with the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the families affected by this tragic crisis,” the statement read.

Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts toward peace and stability in Mozambique.
