The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will close on Thursday, January 9, 2025, to honor the passing of former President Jimmy Carter.

President Carter, remembered as a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights, was the first U.S. President to visit Nigeria, strengthening U.S.-Nigeria relations and supporting Nigeria’s democratic process. His legacy continues to inspire.

Vice President Kamala Harris, speaking at a memorial service, highlighted Carter’s profound contributions both during and after his presidency. From founding the Carter Center to his work in public health, human rights, and diplomacy, Carter’s influence extended globally.

As a forward-thinking leader, Carter implemented significant policies, including comprehensive energy initiatives, environmental protection, and the expansion of America’s national parks. His role in the Camp David Accords and establishing full diplomatic relations with China were underscored as milestones of his presidency.

Carter’s humility and dedication to service were also remembered through his efforts with Habitat for Humanity and the eradication of Guinea worm disease.

“May his life be a lesson for the ages and a beacon for the future,” Vice President Harris said. “May God bless President Jimmy Carter and the United States of America.”

The U.S. diplomatic missions in Nigeria will resume operations on Friday, January 10, 2025.
