Ogbe Stadium Tragedy: Governor Okpebholo mourns Pius Etim, criticizes PDP’s response

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Pius Etim, a young man who lost his life on Thursday evening following the collapse of a mast at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, during heavy rainfall.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor Owaen Fred Itua, the Governor described the incident as “unfortunate, sad, and painful,” Governor Okpebholo extended heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a young man, Pius Etim, during the intense rainfall and collapse of a mast at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. On behalf of the people of Edo State, I offer my deepest sympathies to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this period of grief,” the governor stated.

Beyond his condolences, Governor Okpebholo condemned the reaction of opposition members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who, according to reports, took to social media on Thursday night to make insensitive remarks regarding the tragic event. He criticized their actions as a demonstration of political insensitivity and a lack of empathy.

Preliminary findings indicate that the collapsed structure was erected during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. Governor Okpebholo alleged that the project was poorly executed by contractors engaged under the previous administration, leading to its structural failure.

“The poor workmanship at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, which resulted in this unfortunate loss of life, will be thoroughly investigated. Any contractors or individuals responsible for the substandard work will be held accountable,” he affirmed.

Governor Okpebholo assured Edo residents that his administration remains committed to ensuring the safety and structural integrity of public infrastructure across the state.
