ActionAid Nigeria, Partners urge immediate action on Abor Isiaka security crisis

ActionAid Nigeria, in partnership with the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) and the South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO), has raised serious concerns over the escalating security crisis in Abor Isiala, Eha Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The crisis has led to massive displacement, loss of lives, destruction of farmlands and homes, and severe human rights violations. A statement issued on Tuesday by Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, urged the Nigerian government, security agencies, and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to restore peace and provide urgent relief to those affected.

ActionAid reported that the latest attack left at least 30 people dead and displaced over 7,000 residents, forcing them to seek refuge in neighboring communities and cities such as Awka, Enugu, Abuja, and Imo. The violence, linked to armed herdsmen since 2022, has severely impacted livelihoods, education, and social cohesion.

Key Impacts:

  • Displacement: Over 7,000 residents have fled their homes.
  • Education Disruption: 1,064 children are currently out of school, with only 30% attending classes amid ongoing threats.
  • Livelihood Loss: Widespread destruction of farmlands has deepened food insecurity.
  • Gender-Based Violence: Reports confirm cases of rape and assault on women.
  • Infrastructure Damage: Schools, churches, and markets in Ogomugo and Mgbede have been damaged, hindering recovery efforts.

ActionAid has been working in Enugu State since 2021, focusing on women’s rights, education, and civic engagement. However, due to rising insecurity, its operations were scaled down in 2023 to only Isi-Uzo and Uzo Uwani LGAs.

While commending the government’s initial deployment of police officers, Mamedu stressed that their withdrawal after one day left the community vulnerable. He called for the immediate deployment of well-equipped security forces, prosecution of perpetrators, emergency humanitarian aid, and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.

“The security crisis in Abor Isiala is a humanitarian emergency that demands immediate and sustained action,” Mamedu said. “The people of Abor Isiala cannot continue to live in fear and uncertainty. Immediate and decisive action is required to safeguard lives and restore peace.”
