Nigeria celebrates Adeduntan’s appointment as head coach of George Washington women’s basketball team

The Federal Government of Nigeria has celebrated the historic appointment of Ganiyat Adeduntan as the Head Coach of the George Washington Revolutionaries Women’s Basketball Team, describing it as a significant achievement for Nigeria and the African diaspora.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed pride in Adeduntan’s accomplishment, highlighting it as a major milestone for Nigerian representation in global sports.

“This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone, not only for Coach Adeduntan but also for Nigeria and the African diaspora as a whole,” the statement read.

Dabiri-Erewa praised Coach Adeduntan’s inspiring journey, emphasizing her impressive coaching record and unwavering dedication to excellence.

“We are immensely proud of Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan for this groundbreaking accomplishment. Her leadership, resilience, and passion for basketball have set a new standard for Nigerian excellence on the global stage. She embodies the spirit of hard work and determination, and her success serves as an inspiration to young Nigerian women aspiring to break barriers in sports and beyond,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

She further noted that NiDCOM is confident that Adeduntan’s tenure at George Washington University will lead to greater success for the program.

Proven Track Record of Excellence

Adeduntan’s appointment follows a successful tenure at Colgate University, where she transformed the basketball program, leading the team to consecutive 20-win seasons and securing a Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) appearance in the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons.

Her return to George Washington University, where she previously served as an assistant coach, represents a homecoming to a program she helped develop.

“Coach Adeduntan’s impressive track record at Colgate University underscores her strategic insight and ability to inspire excellence. Her return to George Washington is not only a personal victory but also a boost to the program she helped build,” the statement added.

Adeduntan’s rise from Ibadan, Nigeria, to the pinnacle of American college basketball underscores the talent, resilience, and determination of Nigerians in the diaspora. Ganiyat Adeduntan is the daughter of Prince (Dr.) Azeez Adeduntan, the Osi Basorun of Ibadan land, a renowned Harvard-trained cardiovascular surgeon, former Commissioner of Health in Oyo State, and a one-time governorship candidate. Her accomplishments reflect a legacy of excellence and service.
