Nigerian Navy dismantles major illegal refinery in Ondo

In a renewed offensive against crude oil theft and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region, the Nigerian Navy, under the ongoing Operation DELTA SANITY, has uncovered and deactivated a major illegal refining site in the Ilepete riverine community of Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State.

The operation, carried out by personnel of Forward Operating Base (FOB) Igbokoda on Monday, 7 April 2025, led to the discovery of a large wooden boat used for transporting stolen crude oil. Also found at the site were a 40-horsepower outboard engine, a Gee Pee storage tank, and multiple jerry cans loaded with large quantities of illegally refined products suspected to be stolen crude oil.

In a statement released by naval authorities, the site was described as a “notorious hub” for illegal refining activities that have long contributed to oil theft and environmental pollution in the region. The Navy confirmed that the illegal facility was promptly dismantled and rendered inactive to prevent further use.

The Commander of FOB Igbokoda reaffirmed the Navy’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and national economic interests. “The Nigerian Navy will continue to intensify surveillance and intelligence-led operations to identify, intercept, and dismantle all illegal bunkering and refining activities across the coastal states,” the Commander stated.

This development is part of broader efforts under Operation DELTA SANITY, launched to combat crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other maritime crimes, particularly in oil-producing states. The operation has so far led to numerous arrests, seizures, and destruction of illegal refineries and storage facilities.

Residents of the Ilepete community expressed relief at the operation, noting the environmental damage caused by these illegal activities, which have affected local fishing and water quality. Community leaders have also pledged support to security agencies in reporting suspicious activities.

As investigations continue, the Nigerian Navy reiterated its call for increased collaboration with local communities and stakeholders to curb economic sabotage and restore ecological balance in the Niger Delta region.
