Nigeria Customs successfully pilots e-currency declaration at Abuja airport

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the successful pilot deployment of its Electronic Currency Declaration Form (e-CDF) at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, marking a significant step in its digital transformation agenda to bolster border controls and enhance financial transparency.

Launched on April 9, 2025, the pilot phase was executed smoothly, demonstrating the system’s capability to securely and efficiently capture both inbound and outbound currency declarations from cross-border travellers.

In a statement, Assistant Comptroller of Customs National Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Maiwada said during the trial period, a total of 69 currency declaration transactions were processed. Outbound declarations accounted for 51 transactions with a total declared value of $1,200,281.22, while inbound declarations totalled 18 transactions valued at $177,786.88.

The e-CDF platform, developed in line with international anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) standards, provides real-time data to support intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance compliance, facilitate legitimate travel and trade, and safeguard Nigeria’s borders.

Following the success of the Abuja pilot, the NCS plans to extend the e-CDF deployment to other international airports and border posts nationwide.
