NHRC probes arrest of Verydarkblackman

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched an inquiry into the arrest and detention of social commentator Verydarkblackman (VDM), following public outcry over the incident.

In a statement on Monday, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, confirmed that interventions have been made with relevant authorities to ensure VDM’s rights are upheld. He has also directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

The development was disclosed by Ojukwu’s Special Assistant, Mr. Benedict Agu, who addressed protesters gathered at the Commission’s headquarters to express concern over the situation.

Commending the protesters for their peaceful and orderly conduct, Ojukwu described their actions as a demonstration of the power of civic engagement. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and international human rights instruments.

Ojukwu emphasized that the NHRC will continue to monitor the case to ensure due process and the rule of law are upheld. He assured that the Commission remains dedicated to protecting the rights of all individuals living in Nigeria.
