Amnesty condemns deadly bandit attack in Zamfara

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the latest brutal attack by armed bandits on Madira town in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, which left five people dead and an unspecified number abducted.

According to eyewitness reports, over 100 armed men stormed the village on motorcycles in the early hours of the day, killing residents, razing homes, and spreading terror across the community. This attack follows a series of similar violent raids in the region.

On 7 May, the same group of gunmen reportedly attacked Dayau village in the same LGA, burning homes and food storage facilities. A day later, they raided Unguwar Sarkin Musulmi village and abducted two people.

“These vicious attacks on rural communities in northern Nigeria continue with alarming frequency,” Amnesty International said in a statement. “The bandits act with impunity, showing complete disregard for human life, while security forces fail to take adequate measures to protect civilians from these predictable assaults. This ongoing failure is utterly shameful.”

Zamfara State has remained one of the epicentres of armed banditry in Nigeria, with residents facing recurring threats to their lives, homes, and livelihoods. Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to urgently prioritise the safety and protection of citizens in affected communities.
