Sokoto boat tragedy claims seven lives

A tragic boat mishap in Sullubawa community of Shagari Local Government Area, Sokoto State, has claimed the lives of seven individuals. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Sokoto Operations Office (SOO) confirmed the incident, which occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2025.

According to initial reports, strong winds are believed to have caused the boat to capsize mid-river, leading to the fatal drowning of the victims. Following the incident, a joint team from NEMA and the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) was promptly dispatched to the area to conduct an on-site assessment and gather firsthand information.

During the team’s visit, they were accompanied by the Chairman of Shagari Local Government Council and the legislator representing the area. Efforts to recover the victims and provide support to affected families are ongoing, as authorities work to prevent future occurrences of such tragic events.
