Court jails 14 Chinese Nationals for cyberterrorism, internet fraud

A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced 14 Chinese nationals to one year imprisonment each for cyberterrorism and internet fraud.

Justice Daniel Osiagor delivered the verdict on Friday, June 27, 2025, following their arraignment by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The convicts — Su Zong Gen, Li Zhong Chang, Chen Gui Ping, Li Xiang Long, San Feng Zhang, Jia Yang, Jia Zhi Hao, Liu Chuang, Yu Hai Ging, Zhao Xiao Liang, Dai Li, Tao Kun, Mao Bu Yi, and Zhao Zi Cheng — were among 792 suspects arrested during a December 19, 2024 sting operation tagged “Eagle Flush Operation” targeting a syndicate allegedly involved in cryptocurrency investment and romance scams.

Initially pleading not guilty, the defendants later changed their plea to guilty during Friday’s proceedings. Prosecution counsel T.J. Banjo and M.S. Owede urged the court to convict them accordingly, a motion agreed to by the defence.

Justice Osiagor sentenced each of them to one year imprisonment with an option of a ₦1,000,000 fine. The court also ordered their repatriation by the Nigeria Immigration Service within seven days of completing their sentences.

Additionally, all items recovered from the convicts during the operation were forfeited to the Federal Government.
