The Zumunta Association USA Inc., a U.S.-based nonprofit, has announced plans to train 1,000 youths from northern Nigeria in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as part of its commitment to youth empowerment and community development.
This initiative will form part of the association’s 2025 Annual Convention, scheduled to take place from July 14 to 25 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, President of the Association, Mr. Sunday Bitrus, revealed that the programme also includes a medical outreach to be held from June 14 to 23 at Gudi General Hospital, Akwanga. The outreach aims to provide essential healthcare services to underserved communities in the area.
Founded in New York in 1991, the Zumunta Association has awarded scholarships worth over N100 million to more than 5,000 science students in Northern Nigeria. Bitrus noted that the association receives over 810,000 applications annually, reflecting the growing demand for educational support.
Beyond scholarships, the association has partnered with over 30 NGOs to implement various community development projects, including school renovations, health interventions, and support for vulnerable populations through government health schemes.
Other highlights of the upcoming convention include the Zumunta Golf Classic and Tennis Tournaments, business meetings focused on strategic sectors such as agriculture, mining, health, and housing, as well as a gala, awards ceremony, and stakeholder engagement with traditional rulers.
Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, represented by Secretary Dr. Sule Yakubu Bassi, commended the association’s longstanding contributions and expressed NIDCOM’s readiness to explore further collaboration.
