US embassy clarifies reasons for visa validity reduction in Nigeria

The United States Mission in Nigeria has addressed public concerns and misconceptions surrounding the recent reduction in the validity of most nonimmigrant U.S. visas for Nigerian citizens.

In a statement, the Mission clarified that the policy change is not linked to any country’s position on third-country deportations, adoption of e-visa systems, or affiliations with groups such as BRICS. Instead, it is part of a broader, ongoing global review aimed at strengthening the integrity of the U.S. immigration system.

The review uses technical and security benchmarks to evaluate how other countries handle U.S. visa processes, the Mission explained.

Reaffirming its commitment to strong bilateral relations, the U.S. stated: “We value our longstanding partnership with Nigeria and remain committed to working closely with the Nigerian public and government officials to help meet those criteria and benchmarks.”

The U.S. emphasized its dedication to promoting safe, legal, and mutually beneficial travel between the two nations.
