NSCDC trains 250 officers in sign language to enhance inclusive security in FCT

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has trained 250 officers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command in sign language to improve intelligence gathering and strengthen inclusive security operations across the nation’s capital.

The five-week training programme, organised by the FCT Command, aimed to equip personnel with non-verbal communication skills to effectively engage with hearing-impaired individuals and vulnerable communities.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, said the initiative reflects the Corps’ commitment to building a safer and more inclusive capital city. “In the 21st-century security environment, inclusion is not a privilege — it is a necessity,” he stated.

Odumosu emphasized that sign language skills will enhance service delivery, intelligence gathering, complaint resolution, and interrogation efforts without relying on interpreters. He lauded the support of the NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for backing the initiative and enabling the command to lead on inclusive security.

Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Chief Ayuba Burkin Gufwan, praised the effort as a landmark step toward inclusive public service. He called for sign language training to be mainstreamed across all NSCDC formations and urged full implementation of the 5% employment quota for Persons with Disabilities as stipulated in the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

Founder of Deaf-in-Tech, Arowolo Ayoola, also commended the Corps, describing the training as a step toward justice and fairness for persons with disabilities.
