Amnesty International condemns Plateau massacre, urges action against killings

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the brutal attack on the Bindi-Jebbu community in Tahoss, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 27 people were reportedly killed.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the organisation described the killings as horrific, noting that entire families were locked in their homes and slaughtered, while others attempting to flee were shot.

Amnesty criticised what it described as the Nigerian government’s inadequate response to the recurring violence in Plateau and other states, stating that President Bola Tinubu’s repeated assurances of directing security agencies to act have failed to yield meaningful results.

“The Nigerian authorities must carry out an impartial and thorough investigation into the attack and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The rising death toll and lack of accountability continue to embolden attackers,” the statement read.

The group also highlighted a pattern of attacks on farming communities, where gunmen kill residents, destroy homes, and displace entire villages, while security forces allegedly fail to respond to warnings or intervene promptly.

Amnesty further warned that continued government inaction and lack of justice are leaving rural communities vulnerable and deeply insecure.

“The duty of the government goes beyond issuing statements. Protecting lives and securing communities is a constitutional responsibility, and the failure to do so is unacceptable,” the group said.

Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to take concrete steps to halt the violence and ensure justice and protection for affected communities.
