TikToker, Musician jailed for Naira abuse in Kano

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Kano, has convicted and sentenced a TikToker, Abubakar Ibrahim (a.k.a. G-Fresh), and musician Hamisu Sa’id (a.k.a. Hamisu Breaker) to five months imprisonment each for abuse of the Nigerian currency.

The duo were prosecuted by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate one-count charges for violating Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits the abuse of Naira notes.

Ibrahim was convicted for spraying and trampling on ₦14,000 worth of ₦1,000 notes while dancing at a shop in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano in November 2024. Sa’id was charged for spraying ₦30,000 in ₦200 denominations at a social event in Hadejia, Jigawa State during the same period.

Both pleaded guilty to the charges. Following evidence presented by EFCC counsel Zarami Mohammed, the court sentenced them to five months imprisonment each, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine.

Their prosecution follows ongoing efforts by authorities to enforce laws against the mishandling of Nigeria’s legal tender.
