Nigerian poet named UN global advocate for peace

The United Nations has appointed Nigerian spoken word artist and poet, Maryam Bukar Hassan, as its Global Advocate for Peace, recognising her creative contributions to promoting gender equality, youth empowerment, and inclusive peacebuilding.

Bukar, widely known for her impactful performances and advocacy work, becomes the first-ever Global Advocate for the UN’s entire Peace and Security Pillar. She will support global peace initiatives by amplifying the roles of women and youth through storytelling, public engagement, and participation in key UN campaigns and events.

She has previously collaborated with the UN on projects such as the “Peace Begins With Me” poetry video for the International Day of Peace, and delivered a widely acclaimed spoken word performance at the 2023 Summit of the Future. Her work has also featured at the UN SDG Awards, TED Talks, and the World Bank Youth Summit.

Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, described Bukar’s designation as a significant step in raising awareness around the UN’s peace and security priorities. “Her dedication will help elevate the vital roles of women and youth in advancing inclusive and sustainable peace,” he said.

Echoing this sentiment, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, praised Bukar’s artistry, noting that, “Her compelling words and performances demonstrate how creativity can drive peacebuilding, dialogue, and inclusion.”

Bukar’s accolades include the Sustainable Africa Award at COP28 and a finalist position for the 2024 UN SDG Creativity Award.

As part of her new role, she will participate in global events, including a scheduled performance at New York City’s SummerStage Festival on Sunday, 27 July, alongside celebrated artists Femi Kuti and Elida Almeida.
