Reps move to remove police retirees from contributory pension scheme

The House of Representatives is considering a legislative push to remove retired police officers from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), in a bid to ensure fairer and more dignified retirement benefits for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

The initiative was brought to the floor during plenary on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, through a Personal Explanation by Rep. Mohammed Hussain Jallo (APC, Kaduna), who highlighted the longstanding grievances of police retirees.

Rep. Jallo emphasized that many retired officers, after years of service under challenging and dangerous conditions, are struggling under the current CPS framework. He noted that unlike their counterparts in other security agencies, police retirees are not covered by a more favourable pension structure.

He informed the House that key committees — particularly those on Pensions and Police Affairs — are working on legislative measures to facilitate the exit of police retirees from the CPS. The goal, he said, is to align their benefits with those of other uniformed services and establish a retirement system that reflects their years of dedicated service.

The intervention is gaining traction amidst heightened calls for pension reform, especially following recent protests by police retirees in Abuja, including demonstrations at the National Assembly.

Lawmakers say the effort reflects the 10th Assembly’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel, both serving and retired.
