The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has strengthened its strategic presence in the South-South region with the donation of land by the Akwa Ibom State Government for the establishment of a Forward Operational Base (FOB) and barracks accommodation.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, announced the development during a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Bassey Eno on July 31, 2025, in Uyo. He commended the state government’s commitment to national defence and described the land donation as a significant step toward enhancing Nigeria’s air and maritime security capabilities, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea region.
“This gesture will fast-track the development of critical infrastructure needed to support our operations,” Abubakar stated. “The Forward Operational Base will not only improve our force projection and surveillance capabilities but also contribute to economic development, investment, and tourism in the region.”
In response, Governor Eno welcomed the NAF’s increasing presence in the state and described the visit as a recognition of Akwa Ibom’s growing strategic importance within Nigeria’s defence framework. He reaffirmed the state’s readiness to support national security initiatives.
As part of the visit, the Air Chief also met with the Paramount Ruler of Eket, His Royal Majesty Obong Edidem Charles D. Abia (Attah Ekid Afid), who pledged the support of the traditional institution for the new base. He commended the Nigerian Air Force for its expanding role in safeguarding the region.
The establishment of the FOB marks a milestone in the collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and Akwa Ibom State, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to enhancing regional security, operational effectiveness, and national development.
