President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on young Nigerians active in digital media to use their platforms to promote national unity, responsible communication, and social development.
Speaking at the opening of the Progressives Digital Media Summit in Abuja on Friday, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” President Tinubu urged influencers to verify information before amplifying it, warning against the dangers of misinformation in a rapidly evolving digital space.
“Your generation is redefining what’s possible through innovation and civic engagement,” the President said. “But as your influence grows, so must our shared responsibility. Use your platforms to build businesses, create jobs, and foster unity—not division.”
He praised Nigeria’s youth for their creativity, resilience, and role in shaping a digital future, noting that digital media is now a central driver of economic growth and civic discourse. He reaffirmed his administration’s support for the tech ecosystem through initiatives like the National Digital Innovation Fund.
However, Tinubu also cautioned against the spread of fake news, cyber threats, and divisive content, stressing the need for ethical digital practices.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, echoed this message, describing digital practitioners as the “vanguard of a reborn Nigeria,” while Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, warned of the chaotic nature of social media, where misinformation often outpaces verified content.
The summit, convened by Segun Dada, Special Assistant to the President on New Media, explored strategies to harness digital media for national development while addressing the risks of disinformation, privacy breaches, and threats to social cohesion.
