Japanese envoy urges Nigerian youth to embrace self-development

The Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Suzuki Hideo, has called on Nigerian youth to prioritise self-development, emphasising that the future of the country depends on their ability to engage globally and pursue knowledge.

Speaking during a book donation ceremony held in Abuja at the weekend, the envoy underscored the importance of education and international understanding. The event marked the formal handover of 183 books to the University of Maiduguri, under the “Read Japan Project” — an initiative of the Tokyo Foundation supported by the Nippon Foundation.

“Books are powerful tools for learning and discovery,” Ambassador Suzuki said. “Our greatest hope is that this diverse collection will spark even deeper interest in Japan among your bright and inquisitive students.”

He noted that the donation reflects Japan’s deepening partnership with the University of Maiduguri and its commitment to fostering cultural exchange and academic growth.

Delivering a message on behalf of the Honorary Chair of the Nippon Foundation, Yohei Sasakawa, Ms. Shimada Mami commended the university for promoting Japanese culture, particularly through the creation of the Japanese Culture Club “NARUTO” in 2024. She expressed hope that the books would inspire students to further explore Japan’s history, values, and innovations.

“To date, the Read Japan Project has donated approximately 98,000 books to more than 1,400 institutions across 150 countries,” Sasakawa said. “We are pleased to welcome the University of Maiduguri into this global network.”

Receiving the books, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mohammed Mele, thanked the Japanese Embassy and the Nippon Foundation for their generosity. He announced plans to establish a dedicated “Japanese Corner” at the university’s Ramat Library, as part of efforts to strengthen academic and cultural collaboration.

“This donation opens new doors of understanding and discovery for our students and further affirms our growing partnership with Japan,” Prof. Mele said. “We are committed to making the most of these resources and sustaining this mutually beneficial relationship.”

The event brought together dignitaries from both countries, highlighting the role of cultural diplomacy in deepening bilateral ties and empowering the next generation through education.
