NAFDAC, UN WFP sign MoU to boost food safety and quality standards

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen collaboration on food safety and quality. The agreement was formalised at NAFDAC’s corporate headquarters in Abuja.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, described the partnership as vital to ensuring that food supplied during emergencies meets approved safety and quality benchmarks. She commended WFP’s role in saving lives, building resilience, and aiding recovery in communities affected by conflict, disasters, and climate change.

The MoU focuses on three key areas:

  • Comprehensive food safety and quality assessments for WFP

  • Streamlined processes for food disposal requests

  • Capacity building and technical assistance to enhance food safety protocols

Prof. Adeyeye noted that the two organisations have already collaborated on food fortification initiatives, forming a strong base for the agreement’s rollout. She reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to implementing the MoU and emphasised the value of sharing expertise and best practices.

She also thanked WFP’s leadership in Nigeria and globally for their commitment to advancing food safety in the country.
