The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the escape of sixteen inmates from the New Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa State, following a security breach in the early hours of Tuesday, 12 August 2025.

According to a statement by the Service’s spokesperson, Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar, the incident occurred when some inmates breached security, attacked on-duty personnel, and facilitated the escape. Five correctional officers sustained varying degrees of injury, with two in serious condition and receiving urgent medical care at a government hospital.

Seven of the escapees have so far been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining nine. The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, has visited the facility, ordering a full investigation and warning that any staff found culpable will face disciplinary action.

He further directed an immediate manhunt in collaboration with other security agencies and appealed to the public to remain calm, vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious movements to the nearest security formation.

The NCoS reassured Nigerians of its commitment to public safety and the secure management of custodial centres nationwide.
