Amnesty International Nigeria has called on authorities to urgently investigate the mob killing of a female food vendor, identified as Ammaye, in Kasuwan Garba village, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, 29 August 2025, followed an alleged blasphemy accusation after an exchange between the victim and a young man. Witnesses reported that despite the presence of security personnel, a mob overpowered them and lynched Ammaye on the spot.
In a statement, Amnesty International condemned the act as “deplorable,” stressing that it reflects the government’s persistent failure to address recurring mob violence in the country.
“The authorities must immediately arrest and prosecute all those responsible for this reprehensible act. The fact that a mob could overpower security agents and take the law into their own hands underscores the disregard for due process and the sanctity of life,” the group said.
The organisation urged Nigerian authorities to tackle impunity by ensuring accountability for those involved in the killing and to implement stronger measures to prevent future incidents of mob justice.
