FG condoles Niger State over Borgu boat tragedy

The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the boat mishap in Borgu, Niger State, which claimed the lives of about 32 people. The incident comes barely four months after devastating floods struck Mokwa, also in the state.

In a condolence message, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, extended sympathy to the families of the victims, the Government, and the people of Niger State, assuring them of federal support.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), he said, will work with the Niger State Government to provide relief to survivors and families of the deceased. Idris also commended the swift response of the State Emergency Management Agency, which ensured that all passengers were accounted for.

The minister urged Nigerians to prioritize safety on inland waterways, stressing the importance of wearing protective jackets during boat travel. He further disclosed that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has been directed to launch a nationwide sensitization campaign on water safety.

“We pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wish the survivors a speedy recovery,” Idris added.
